Block # 1...Done

I have started a new quilt. It is "Pumpkin Hill" by Bunny Hill Designs. My hope is that it will be ready to hang in my living room by next fall.( I usually have a seasonal quilt up on the wall) I chose this for a fall quilt for my home because my decor (blues with red accents, white furniture and butter yellow walls) doesn't really lend itself to the usual browns and oranges of Autumn. I liked this pattern because of the predominantly yellow background that I think will work well with the walls.

I have something to admit. I have never appliqued a quilt using any method that requires turning the edges of the fabric under. I have always fused, and then blanket stitched the edges. It's faster and I admit, I like instant gratification.

I decided I was finally going to try to applique like a big girl so this quilt is it! I got some wonderful instruction from my dear friend Barb, and guess what - it's not that difficult!  I realize I may be a little late to this party, but better late than never. :-) So, I will share each block with you as I finish them - that will be my gratification. Thank you for allowing me to share some of my creative adventures with you. Please come again, anytime.  Love, Derrith

It's so cute! Congrats on learning to applique. That's something I've been wanting to learn for a long time.

Oh-so-lovely, and looking forward to seeing its progression. I haven't ever done big girl applique either... but not sure I'm there quite yet. Maybe I need a dear Barb friend to help me along too!
Have a happy week, Derrith

So cute and fun, Derrith!
I love the squirrels! I, being a crazy woman myself, started to "learn" to quilt specific. Styles with a sampler quilt that is about lapsized......ha. Ha. Ha! I didnt realize I was over my head! But it was a small quilt so i thiught i would be able to get it done. After three blocks, i stopped working on it. The third block was "big girl applique.... Not all of it, but the handle on the basket. I am such a perfectionist, it took awhile for me to get it right. I found out later that a sampler quilt would be a good thing to make AFTER learning all the different kinds of squares, not to learn them. The gal told me she had been making nine patch quilts for theee years and was just then beginning to branch out. I have sewn a lot and might actually be able to finish it now. It was square four that stopped me, a dresdan plate... More applique. But that was a LONG time ago, like 13 years ago.... I even still like the fabrics!
Hugs,
Betsy
